Chapter 13
Tempest looked at her reflection in the mirror again, then picked up the brush and vigorously ran it through her silky silver hair â again. Sheâd spent hours trying to make it do something other than hang there. Bailey had come to her rescue, bringing several different types of curling irons and wands and diligently curling sections of hair over and over again, and less than ten minutes later her hair was a shimmering curtain of silver, no trace of curl remaining.
âYou know what? Never mind. It obviously is going to do what it wants to do, and I donât have any more time to waste on it. Iâm just going to get dressed and let the hair do what it wants,â Tempest said, throwing up her hands in surrender.
âYou sure? I still have half a can of hair spray,â Bailey said.
âIâm sure,â Tempest said defeated.
âItâs still gorgeous, even without the curls. You donât need curls,â Bailey said.â
âI just wanted to feel fancy, you know?â Tempest asked.
Bailey laughed. âTempest, you are the most elegant woman Iâve ever met, and you do it effortlessly. You donât need to do anything to outshine anybody else nearby.â
Tempest looked at Bailey. âThank you. I just never did the whole makeup thing and doing my hair and getting all dressed up. I never needed it. And I wanted to look different tonight.â
âYou look different every night. You just stand out.â
âThank you for saying so, Bailey,â Tempest said, still unconvinced.
âHere, letâs put a little soft brown eyeliner on you, and a touch of mascara, a little lipstick and I think youâll be shocked at just what that little bit of difference will make. You wonât even think about the curls anymore.â
âYou think so?â Tempest asked.
âI do.â
An hour later Tempest smiled at her reflection in the mirror. Bailey had finished up quickly and gone home so that Brandt wouldnât have an audience when he arrived to pick Tempest up. Bailey had been right, just a touch of makeup to accentuate and Tempest couldnât believe she was the same person. She grabbed her hairbrush and ran it through her hair once more. A sharp knock startled her, causing her to drop the brush. She leaned over to pick it up and banged her head on the edge of the bathroom counter. âDang it!â she growled, rubbing the spot on her head while slapping the brush onto the cabinet next to the sink.
Huffing out her frustration quickly before stepping out of her bathroom to go answer the door, she couldnât help smiling when her gaze met Brandtâs through the cut glass pane in the door. She opened the door and continued wearing her grin.
âWow,â Brandt said, taking the opportunity to look his fill.
âIs that a good wow, or should I go wash my face?â Tempest asked a little worriedly.
Brandtâs expression skewed up like he couldnât believe sheâd asked that. âYou are so beautiful, Tempest. I thought Iâd noticed it before, but tonight, itâs just much more evident.â
âThank you, I think.
